Magnitude 5.0 quake hits Eastern Samar

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded Sunday a magnitude-5.0 tectonic earthquake about 12 kilometers southwest of Jipadpad, Eastern Samar. The tremor hit at 2:47 a.m. at a depth of 37 kilometers.

In an updated bulletin, Phivolcs said damage to properties and aftershocks were expected from this quake. The state seismic agency reported that it was strongly felt in Jipadpad and Maslog, Eastern Samar.

It was also felt at varying degrees of intensity across the towns of Arteche, Can-Avid, Dolores, Oras, San Policarpio and Taft in Eastern Samra; Catubig, Gamay, Lapinig, Las Navas, Lope de Vega, and Silvino Lobos in Northern Samar; Gandara, Matuguinao, San Jose de Buan, and Calbayog City in Samar.

Other municipalities and cities in Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Samar, and Leyte were also slightly impacted. Instrumental intensities, meanwhile, were recorded in the following areas: Basey and Villareal, Samar; Dulag, Leyte; and Mapanas, Northern Samar.

At 2:14 P.M. Sunday, Phivolcs reported a 4.6-magnitude tectonic quake about 13 kilometers northeast of San Jose de Buan, Samar. It had a depth of 36 kilometers and was also tectonic in origin with a level 1 intensity recorded at Kawayan, Biliran.

Earlier, a separate 4.4-magnitude tremor was also monitored 14 kilometers southwest of Taft, Eastern Samar at a depth of 43 kilometers. It occurred at 2:28 a.m. affecting the towns of Sulat, Taft, Can-Avid, Dolores, San Julian in Eastern Samar.
