NAIA is fourth worst airport in Asia—study

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has been categorized the fourth worst airport in Asia based on travelers’ accounts.

According to the Businessfinancing.co.uk., the NAIA ranked fourth with a rating of 2.78, ahead of Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz International Airport (2.62) and Kazakstan’s Almaty International Airport (2.62).

The worst airport in Asia, on the other hand, was Kuwait International Airport with a rating of 1.69., the only airport with less than two stars in Asia, the review showed.

“Travelers frequently express dissatisfaction with unpleasant odors and unprofessional, slow boarding processes at the NAIA,” study stated.

Meanwhile, Noi Bai International Airport in Vietnam excels with an impressive business traveler rating of 6.80, especially cited for its efficient queuing system.

This was followed by Singapore’s Changi Airport with a rating of 6.63, China’s Hong Kong International Airport (6.48), Qatar’s Hamad International Airport (6.44), Japan’s Narita International Airport (6.23) and Haneda Airport (5.82), India’s Kempegowda International Airport (5.56), Taiwan’s Taoyauan International Airport (5.29), India’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Int’l Airport (5.22) and Indira Gandhi International Airport (4.60).

Globally, the worst airport was Belgium’s Brussels South Charleroi Airport with a rating of 1.20, followed by Germany’s Berlin Brandeburg Airport (1.56), United Kingdom’s Leeds Bradford Airport (1.57), Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in US (1.64) and UK’s Manchester Airport (1.68).

“The worst airport in the world surely … doesn’t even deserve 1 star,” a reviewer said.

The study said both the UK and the US face similar challenges, with six airports from each country making an unwelcome appearance on the list.

Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, Vietnam, has earned the top rating of 6.8 from business travelers worldwide.

The Manila Standard requested a comment from the Department of
Transportation on the rating, but has yet to receive a response as of
press time.

The DOTr, on the other hand, recently awarded the P171 billion
contract to rehabilitate, operate and maintain the NAIA to the SMC SAP Group, formed by San Miguel Holdings Corp., RMM Asian Logistics, Inc., RLW Aviation Development, Inc. and Incheon International Airport Corp.

The San Miguel Group plans to spend at least P88 billion in capital
investments within its first six years and at least P122.3 billion in
for its entire 25-year concession period to modernize the NAIA.
