Lagman files appeal vs. Marcos burial

Albay Representative Edcel Lagman has filed a motion for reconsideration (MR) seeking to reverse the Supreme Court’s decision which allowed Former President Ferdinand Marcos to be buried at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani (LNMB).

In his preliminary statement, the congressman stated, “it is not hard to comprehend that the interment of Marcos in the Cemetery of Heroes inextricably intertwined with the late dictator’s imposition of Martial Law which spawned inordinate oppression, corruption and plunder for 14 ignominious years and even beyond.”

He further stated, “his burial in the memorial of good men impedes on the continuing quest for illusive justice for the victims of Martial Law, perpetuates the impunity of his transgressions and mocks the unfinished task of recovering his hoard of ill-gotten wealth.”

On November 15, 2016, the High Tribunal voted 9-5 dismissing all petitions questioning the burial of Marcos at the Heroes’ Cemetery.

The SC justices maintained President Rodrigo Duterte did not commit grave abuse of discretion when he ordered the former president’s burial at the LNMB.
