Funds amounting to P100 million will be made available for athletes who will qualify, train and take part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The financial assistance was guaranteed by President Rodrigo Duterte following the successful campaign Filipino athletes in the recent 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
The president talked about the funding in a speech he made on Wednesday during the recognition of the SEA Games medalists in Malacañang.
The president said the funding will come from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor), which earlier committed the support.
“So I have another P100 million. But ‘yan lang, I’m very strict about money. I am very strict about money and kailangan talaga (everything) must be accounted for up to the last centavo,” said the president during his talks with the athletes and sports officials.
The Chief Executive added that he will ask lawmakers to give the athletes additional benefits, and this will be for increases in allowances while training.
The Philippines won 149 golds, 117 silvers, and 121 bronzes to claim the overall title in the biennial tournament held in the country for the fourth time.
Almost P79-milion cash incentives were also given to SEA Games medalists.
This is in accordance with Republic Act 10699, which rewards winning athletes. A gold medalist gets P300, 000 while P150, 000 is for silver medalist and P60,000 for bronze.
President Duterte was with by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Congressman Bambol Tolentino, Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc) Chairman and House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go during the distribution of the incentives.
Members of the Philippine national team was conferred the “Order of Lapu Lapu” for winning the overall championship in the Games.
They were led by Team Philippines Chef de Mission and Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez.
Around 600 medalists of the SEAG trooped to the Malacañang Palace to meet President Duterte and receive their cash reward.
The award was also given to those who are “deserving of merit and recognition” and to fully express the President’s appreciation of the Filipino people’s contributions to the success of the campaigns and programs of the government.”
