So you think you’re cool? Well, tbh, you ain’t lit if you don’t know what these words mean. Young folks are savage af. They may throw shade at you and will be so dead once they hear you use these terms in a v wrong way.

Definition: (adj.) Short for “very”; born from and mostly used in short messaging and online conversations

How to use: “If you don’t understand what I’m saying, I’d be v upset”

TBH

Definition: (phrase) Abbreviation of “to be honest”; usually used right before or after saying an opinion or a comment

How to use: “TBH, I think millennials are misunderstood” / “You’re being unreasonable, tbh”

GOAT

Definition: (title) Acronym for “greatest of all time”; used mostly in, but not limited to, describing athletes and musicians

How to use: “Rihanna is good, but Beyonce is GOAT” / “For many Filipino boxing fans, Manny Pacquiao is still GOAT”

Cancel

Definition: (verb) To reject something: a person, a place, or a thing; usually used when said object is no longer trendy or officially over

How to use: “Don’t swipe right on him, cancel right away!” / “The man-bun trend is cancelled”

Dead

Definition: (adj.) Used when something is hilarious; can also refer to oneself when he/she is in stitches or in big trouble

How to use: “I’m dead from watching SNL” / “I have so many unfinished projects. I’ll be dead soon”

Goals

Definition: (noun) Something that is aspirational; typically used as a hashtag

How to use: “Heart Evangelista’s shoe collection is goals!” / “Taylor Swift and friends are #squadgoals”

Lit

Definition: (adj.) Used to describe something that is amazing or awesome

How to use: “Last night’s party was so lit” 

No chill

Definition: (phrase) Used to denote that someone is acting irrationally or reckless; used to describe an irrational behavior 

How to use: “The man who’s swearing loudly has no chill” / “Fighting fandoms are acting like they have no chill sometimes”

Savage

Definition: (adj.) Used to describe something that is bad ass or out of control; a person who says or does things as they please with little to no regard about consequences 

How to use: “Her reply to the inappropriate comment on her Facebook post was savage” / “The president can be savage at times”

Throw shade

Definition: (verb) To show disapproval, judgement, or disrespect towards someone or something

How to use: “It’s not difficult to see how you’re throwing shade at me” / “I don’t mean to throw shade, but her outfit is terrible”
