Tattoos, an age-old practice that dates back millennia, have endured the test of time, transcending cultures, civilizations, and generations.  Over time, they have seamlessly woven themselves into the rich tapestry of our culture and traditions, perpetually evolving with each passing generation.

To many, a tattoo is a canvas for personal self-expression, a medium through which one’s inner thoughts and emotions can find a permanent and artistic voice. For others, these inked designs have become indelible marks of their identity, bearing profound significance and memories.

Yet, in the eyes of some, tattoos remain enigmatic, and misconceptions abound. They hastily pass judgment on those adorned with ink, branding them as undesirable, unclean, or even associating them with criminal elements.

This year’s Dutdutan Festival gathers an enormous crowd of artists, collectors, and ink enthusiasts where they had the chance to enjoy nights of music and art

It was precisely this prevailing misunderstanding that kindled the inspiration of  Alfred Guevara, the visionary founder of the Dutdutan Festival. Guevara’s mission was to dismantle the unfounded stereotypes that tattooed individuals were inherently criminals or gang members. Instead, he aimed to underscore the true essence of tattoos as a powerful form of self-expression.

Through this celebration, he sought to highlight the artistry, creativity, and individuality that tattoos represent, making it abundantly clear that they are far more than mere symbols of delinquency.

“People are expressive in their lives; they express their beliefs and convictions through art. It’s a form of self-expression, and it’s their right, which can be seen visually on their bodies,” he explained.

This year, Guevara highlighted the celebration of urban culture and lifestyle. It was not just a tattoo expo; the event also featured live performances by local musical acts, such as  Gloc-9, Gracenote, Tanya Markova, Zild, December Avenue,  and  Urbandub.

Held at the World Trade Center, the two-day event aimed to celebrate the rich culture of the tattoo community. It attracted a massive crowd of artists, collectors, and ink enthusiasts who had the chance to enjoy nights of music and art.

One of the main features that consistently drew crowds at Dutdutan was the tattoo competitions. Presented by Tribal, the Lower Left Manila, and PhilTAG, Dutdutan 23’s highlights included exceptional pieces by renowned tattoo artists who competed in various categories.

The “Tattoo of the Day” award remained the most coveted since entries in this category were created on the same day. Judges had a tough time selecting winners as collectors showcased the most impressive and striking artworks etched onto their skin.

Dutdutan 23 delivered an electrifying urban culture experience, featuring a powerhouse roster of musical icons. Audiences enjoyed two energetic nights of live performances by both local and foreign musical acts.

Dutdutan 23 continued to revolutionize the country’s tattoo scene, demanding and capturing full attention, and providing a lifestyle experience that we take great pleasure in.
