Sustainability is setting the tone for this year’s textile trends, as designers blend natural elements with evolving technology to reflect society’s shifting values in uncertain times.
Diana Jean Katigbak, textile educator at the Fashion Design and Merchandising Program of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, said that current trends focus on mindful material choices and biophilic design, highlighting raw textures and imperfections found in nature.
“Geometric motifs and contrasting colors now blur the line between tradition and modernity,” Katigbak said, adding that bold yet subdued tones and hyper-realistic textures are pushing design boundaries, contrasting with last year’s preference for handmade treatments like embroidery and beading.
Katigbak, also known for her work in natural dyeing, said there’s a growing preference for unconventional combinations that merge natural elements with imaginative design, influencing materiality in fashion. She noted a shift toward retro fashion, simple silhouettes, and rich textile treatments that reimagine traditional prints through surreal textures.
The latest direction aligns with WGSN’s global forecast, according to Katigbak. One key theme, Common Connections, emphasizes authenticity, storytelling, and community. This approach encourages zero-waste techniques, functional basics, and ornamentation that embraces imperfection and local craft traditions.
Katigbak cited updated gingham and windowpane checks, painted warp ikat, jacquards, and floating yarn textures as standout elements in this movement. She also highlighted hand-blocked prints, geometric dobbies, and passementerie as part of a renewed appreciation for intricate detailing.
Another trend, Restorative Realms, reflects the search for calm amid global uncertainty. It draws heavily from nature, with garden-inspired themes, soft color palettes, and salvaged looks. Biophilic designs, plant-based materials, and non-toxic pigments are expected to dominate this category.
“There’s a growing emphasis on reducing environmental strain while reclaiming peace and balance through design,” Katigbak said. Mineral and rock-inspired fabrics with distressed finishes and raw imperfections are part of this trend.
Meanwhile, Digitopia explores the fusion of digital creativity and craft. Katigbak said expect textiles with color-shifting effects, exaggerated silhouettes, and hyper-haptic textures. These designs often blur the lines between fantasy and reality, with dreamlike aesthetics and sensorial features.
She added that technological innovation is also enabling the creation of precise, waste-reducing materials and highly personalized products. New formats include lace-like, skeletal fabrics and ombré finishes using advanced color-material-finish (CMF) techniques. Quilts, padded textiles, and heat-pressed patterns are also being updated for contemporary appeal.
Benilde continues to incorporate global insights from WGSN and fashion intelligence platform BoF in its curriculum, helping students stay attuned to industry shifts and explore sustainable, forward-looking design practices.
