On the Job on HBO GO

Joel Torre (left) and Gerald Anderson star as prisoners hired to execute the enemies of a military general in ‘On the Job’

The neo-noir crime thriller On the Job, directed by Erik Matti, is chilling not only for its premise but also because it was allegedly inspired by a true story in the Philippine prison system. Written by Filipino-Japanese Michiko Yamamoto, this 2013 blockbuster tells the story of two prisoners who double as hitmen, temporarily freed to execute enemies of their client, military general Pacheco (Leo Martinez).

The movie offers a dark and swift descent into human inhumanity, featuring Joel Torre (Mario) and Gerald Anderson (Daniel) as prisoners who accept their roles to support their families. Joey Marquez (Acosta) and Piolo Pascual (Coronel) star as law enforcement officers.

Their lives intersect when the hitmen kill a drug lord and a woman named Linda. Linda’s husband reveals to Acosta that these killings were ordered by Pacheco, who is running for the Senate, and his congressman friend Manrique (Michael de Mesa).

The critically acclaimed film On the Job presents a tangled web of corruption and murder, culminating in a heartbreaking end.

The friends meet weekly to watch their favorite K-dramas, revealing their struggles and joys. In the pilot episode, Tish feels pressured to marry due to her ticking biological clock, showcasing the group’s varied personalities: competitive, positive, restless, funny, perfectionist, insecure, and hopeful.

A standout moment is Episode 7, where Fran and Val sneak into a VIP tent at K-pop idol Jin Ho’s exclusive fan meet. Across two seasons and 18 episodes (available on Viu), we see the characters’ nuances as they face ethical dilemmas, revealing their strengths and vulnerabilities. Issues like risking friendships for relationships, self-confidence, and breakups feel very real.
