Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya—National government agencies, in partnership with concerned Local Government Units, will be empowering the women’s sector in Cagayan Valley to uplift their economic status.

Teresita Tabaog, Department of Science and Technology assistant regional director, said entrepreneurship skills will be taught to 111 women micro-entrepreneurs in the region.

They will be given capability training to prepare them for various entrepreneurship projects to support their families, she said.

Tabaog, also the vice chairperson of the Regional Gender and Development Committee, said this initiative will be endorsed to the Regional Development Council for approval and implementation.

“This will be implemented with partner agencies through a convergence of efforts, programs, projects and services that will ensure the sustained livelihood for our women sector,” she said.

Tabaog also encouraged women in Cagayan Valley to comply with government regulations and laws to be qualified for such livelihood programs.

The move is also part of RGAD’s objective toward empowering the women in Cagayan Valley, which will address issues on lack of financial management and accounting skills, saving and marketing of their products, among others,” Tabaog said.

Meanwhile, the intensified information and advocacy campaign by concerned agencies on the rights of women and children has resulted to the increased reporting of Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) cases in Cagayan Valley region.

Police Captain Nieves Menia, Regional PNP focal Person on Gender and Developmen Program, said Cagayan Valley ranked second in the most number of VAWC cases in the country last year.

“This was reached due to the heightened reporting of VAWC cases in the region, which were caused by our multi-sectoral and barangay-based campaigns among concerned government and non-government agencies,” she said.

Menia made the report during the recent RGAD meeting at the Nueva Vizcaya State University mini-theater in this town.

She added that from January to February 15 this year, VAWC cases were reported with 5 in Cagayan, 2 in Isabela, 1 in Santiago City, 2 in Nueva Vizcaya and 1 in Quirino province.

Menia said Physical Abuse with 28 cases tops the forms of VAWC cases in the region last year, followed by Sexual Abuse with 1, Psychological Abuse with 5 and Economic Abuse with 6 cases.
