DPWH upgrades disaster preps in Iloilo, Aklan with new multipurpose buildings

To strengthen disaster preparedness across Iloilo and Aklan, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Western Visayas constructed several new multi-purpose buildings to enhance community resilience and provide essential resources for local governance and community events.

DPWH Western Visayas Director Engr. Sanny Boy Oropel highlighted the project’s importance, especially for towns vulnerable to natural disasters.

“These facilities will accommodate various community activities and can be used as evacuation centers during disasters. These projects are vital for the sustainable development of our towns,” Oropel said in a statement.

Among the recently completed projects is a two-story building in Barangay Poblacion’s plaza in Malinao. This P4.9 million facility spans 206 square meters and includes a roof deck, balcony, and six restrooms, providing a safe, versatile space for community events and shelter.

In Barangay New Buswang, Kalibo, a multi-purpose building worth P1.6-million with similar functions was established, offering residents a reliable facility for gatherings and essential services.

Another major addition is the multi-purpose building in Balete, Aklan, valued at P12 million. Designed for safety and functionality, the building is equipped with hardscapes, railings, fire alarm systems, auxiliary systems, and CCTV.

In Barangay Ma. Cristina, Madalag, a P4.9 million building was constructed to enhance local resilience.

The DPWH also undertook repairs of two classrooms at Boracay National High School, which included replacing roofing, upgrading the ceiling, and installing folding partitions, doors, and rewiring. This restoration ensures safe and quality spaces for students.

In Nabas, a newly built public market valued at P19.7 million garnered thanks from Aklan residents, who see these projects as significant steps forward in government-led local development.
