Guimaras is set to make waves in the sports tourism world as it hosts the third leg of the prestigious International Open Water Swim Circuit on June 29-30, 2024.

This exciting event will take place at the scenic Taklong Island National Marine Reserve (TINMAR) in Nueva Valencia, under the auspices of the Department of Tourism (DOT) Western Visayas.

With an aim to cement Western Visayas as a premier destination for sports and eco-tourism, particularly in open water swimming, DOT Western Visayas Director Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez emphasized the dual significance of the event.

“This event is not just about the sport; it also promotes environmental sustainability and community engagement,” Rodriguez stated.

The event will also shine a spotlight on Guimaras, highlighting its potential as a top eco-tourism destination in the region.

The DOT Western Visayas aims to attract 150 participants, showcasing the island’s natural beauty and fostering an appreciation for the environment.

Provincial Board Member Felipe Hilan Nava highlighted the significant benefits this event will bring to Guimaras, including promoting tourism, boosting the local economy, ensuring environmental sustainability, and enhancing community engagement, health, and cultural heritage.

Nava assured participants of their safety, with support from the Philippine National Police and Philippine Coast Guard.

Taklong Island, designated as a marine protected area in 1990 under Presidential Proclamation No. 525, spans a total of 1,143 hectares, encompassing the major islands of Taklong and Tandog.

Renowned for its rich mangrove forests, the island serves as a crucial barrier against storm surges and a habitat for diverse bird species.

The International Open Water Swim Circuit kicked off its first leg in Sipalay, Negros Occidental, in February, followed by the second leg on Sicogon Island, Carles, Iloilo, in April. The final leg will take place on the world-famous Boracay Island in September.
