A MAGNITUDE 5.0 earthquake rocked Surigao del Sur at 5:16 a.m. Monday.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor was an aftershock of a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Surigao del Sur in December 2023.
Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol said the quake of tectonic origin had
a depth of 28 kilometers.
Intensity 5 was felt in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, while Bislig City had intensity 4.
Intensity 3 was felt in Boston, Davao Oriental.
“This is still an aftershock of magnitude 7.4 earthquake last Dec. 2. We can say that it’s a new quake if the epicenter is farther than the previous one,” Bacolcol said.
At least 9,129 aftershocks had been recorded from the quake last December.
