Integrated energy company Semirara Mining and Power Corp. is looking at slightly higher coal production this year to 15 million metric tons from 14.3 million MT in 2021, a top executive said.

“Overall, we expect stable output from the coal segment given the controlled water level at Molave NB7. Our goal is to produce up to 15 million metric tons. This should allow us to sell around 15 million metric tons of coal,” SMPC president Cristina Gotianun said during the company’s annual stockholders’ meeting.

She said that at an annual coal production rate of 13 million to 16 million metric tons, “the company has enough coal reserves until the expiration of its coal operating contract in 2027.”

Gotianun said that in the power segment, SMPC sees continued headwinds and tailwinds related to Unit 2 of SEM-Calaca Power Corp., election-related activities, higher fuel prices and full reopening of the economy.

Unit 2 of Sem-Calaca broke down in December 2020 after only seven months of use. It resumed operations in September 2021 at a derated capacity.
