E-commerce group wants MOU updated

The groups that signed an e-commerce memorandum of understanding (MOU) seek to amend the terms of the agreement to factor in the broader objectives of the Internet Transactions Act (ITA) for a fairer and safer online space.

About 14 MOU signatories made the call at the 4th annual review and assessment of the e-commerce MOU on May 31, 2024. The MOU aims to develop efficient takedown mechanisms by strengthening coordination between brand owners and e-commerce platform members Lazada, Shopee, TikTok Shop and Zalora.

The members are suggesting measures that strictly observe existing policy prohibiting prescription drugs from being made available for purchase online. Another approach is enabling deeper collaboration with more law enforcement agencies by putting the 15-member National Committee on IP Rights officially on board the group.

Several members proposed to finetune the MOU to standardize methods and metrics in searching for counterfeit items.
