MPTC quits Myanmar, Laos toll road projects

Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. has abandoned its plans to expand in Myanmar and Laos due to unviable markets for toll road roads.

“Were looking at opportunities for instance in Myanmar, but we thought the country is not yet ready for toll roads, maybe three to five years,” said MPTC president and chief executive Rodrigo Franco.

“There were also feelers for instance in Laos, but based on our early assessment we need to wait a little bit more, maybe 3 to 5 years,” he added.

“You don’t want to do projects that the government would be the one to repay, the principle is we invest if the project economics are okay and the project can pay itself rather than the government to compensate you,” Franco said. Darwin G. Amojelar
