Unilever Philippines Inc., the local unit of British consumer goods giant Unilever, is building a 13.7-hectare mega distribution center in Cabuyao, Laguna to support its expansion in the country, a top executive said Monday.

The new mega distribution center is expected to speed up the distribution and transport of Unilever’s products from its manufacturing sites in Cavite and Paco, Manila, the company said in a statement.

“Building a mega distribution center is a key strategy to achieve Unilever Philippines’ growth trajectory for the next three years. As a purpose-driven company, it allows us to streamline our operations, accelerate delivery of goods, create economies of scale, and generate jobs in the local market. This is a landmark development for us as we mark our 90th year of doing business in the Philippines,” said Unilever Philippines vice president of sales Benjie Yap.

The distribution hub is accessible to alternative ports in Batangas for vessels heading to the Visayas and Mindanao, a good way of avoiding potential delays as a result of congestion in Manila ports.

The center, which is expected to be fully operational by October this year, is equipped with future-ready facilities to ensure efficient and sustainable operations capable of storing 130,000 pallets with 97 loading docks.

It also has paperless warehouse management systems and safety-compliant storage systems. The mega distribution center’s design and technology will use materials intended to reduce environmental impact.

Unilever, the leading fast-moving consumer goods company in the Philippines, said it continued to expand its reach in retail for its products in personal care, foods, home care, and refreshments. Through its supply and distribution network.

The company, which generated over 10,000 jobs throughout the country, said it remained committed to invest 100 million euros or about P6 billion in the Philippines since its initial announcement in 2015.

“The continued growth of the Philippine economy, backed by strong domestic consumption and a vibrant retail market, opens a lot of possibilities for Unilever. Despite global uncertainty, we remain optimistic regarding our presence in the Filipino home. Our expansion is indicative of our continued commitment to invest in the health, hygiene, and well-being of Filipinos,” Yap said.
