The Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA) and key government agencies and stakeholders extended a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on responsible mining in response to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call for a more stable and sustainable mining industry.
The ceremonial signing on Nov. 22, 2024, in Baguio City, brought together the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Finance (DOF), Department of Energy (DOE), National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Investment and Economic Affairs (OSAPIEA) and other partners to create an inclusive and sustainable mining sector in the Philippines.
DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga and ARTA Secretary Ernesto Perez, who co-chairs the extended mining MOU, reiterated the importance of collaboration among agencies, private sector stakeholders and indigenous communities.
“Responsible mining is essential for ensuring that economic gains benefit both the nation and future generations. By working together, we can achieve a sector that prioritizes sustainability and social equity,” said Yulo-Loyzaga.
Perez highlighted the importance of streamlining processes and adopting modern technologies to improve mining operations.
“This extension and expansion align with President Marcos Jr.’s vision of a mining industry that harmonizes mineral extraction with environmental protection,” he said.
Perez also underscored the role of innovation in optimizing resource use, minimizing waste and mitigating environmental impacts.
The extended MOU aims to implement stricter environmental and social safeguards, improve transparency and accountability, and align mining operations with international best practices to attract foreign investment, generate jobs and support sustainable economic growth.
