A group of Quezon City residents filed a complaint before the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) over an unfinished portion of the Marikina River flood control project that allegedly led to flooding in Quezon City last month.
Alvin Emil Esberto, president of Vista Real Classica Federation of Homeowners’ Association Inc. (VRCFHAI), sent a letter to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan dated August 12, 2024 to report that a portion of Vista Real Classica Subdivision in Batasan Hills was flooded at the hip level during the heavy rains caused by Typhoon Carina on July 24, 2024.
“Upon investigation, we found out that a portion of the Marikina River Dike Wall [a project of DPWH], is left unfinished. The unfinished gap measures around 5 to 6 meters wide. Consequently, the water from Marikina River went inside our village through that opening,” Esberto said in the letter.
“In view thereof, we respectfully request your good office that the said opening be permanently closed to spare us from another flooding,” Esberto said.
The VRCFHAI also sent copies of the letter to the office of Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte.
The unfinished section, along Boston Street, is part of Vista Real Classica Subdivision. The flooded waters swamped homes and properties there. The project was intended to prevent similar damage caused by Typhoon Ondoy, which inundated the subdivision in 2009.
