Maynilad Water Services Inc. (Maynilad) said it is spending P686 million to enhance its water infrastructure by repurposing sludge lagoons at its La Mesa Compound in Quezon City.
Maynilad Water supply operations head Ronaldo Padua said the activity would involve converting four lagoons into a 200-million-liter raw water reservoir.
“Since our La Mesa Treatment Plant rehabilitation program already included the construction of new sludge treatment facilities, the existing sludge lagoons could be put to better use as a storage site for raw water. By repurposing the lagoons, we can maximize the value of the site and help address our need for increased water storage,” he said.
Slated for completion in the fourth quarter of 2025, the reservoir will be the company’s first dedicated raw water storage.
The company can better manage periods of reduced inflows from the Angat-Ipo Dam system, a critical water source for Metro Manila and surrounding areas by increasing the storage capacity for raw water, it said.
The reservoir will also act as a settlement basin, allowing particles to settle before treatment, improving water quality, particularly during the rainy season when high turbidity is often experienced.
The project is part of Maynilad’s broader commitment to ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply for its customers in the west zone of Metro Manila and Cavite.
