The Philippine Chinese Education and Research Center (PCERC) held an awarding ceremony on April 5, 2025 at the Century Seafood Restaurant to honor the recipients of the “2024-2025 Shi Wei Peng Outstanding Filipino Chinese School Principal and Model Chinese Teachers Award.”
More than 500 people attended the event, including Consul Cao Kaiwen and Hou Yan Ping from the Chinese Embassy, descendants of the Shi family including Shi Mei Qing and her two sons, PCERC Chairman Huang Duan Ming, members of the review committee, teachers and leaders from the Filipino-Chinese community.
The ceremony was officiated by teacher Zhou Yue Han from the Philippine Cultural College.
Chairman Huang Duan Ming delivered a speech to laud the incredible contributions of Shi Wei Peng and his son, Shi Jia Jun, in supporting Filipino-Chinese education for over 41 years.
Huang said that despite the absence of government funding, Filipino- Chinese education has flourished over the past 125 years, largely due to the unwavering support of dedicated individuals like the Shi family.
Huang introduced the PCERC’s “Filipino Chinese Education Reform 2.0 Project.”
The initiative aims to introduce several new developments, including a fresh Chinese textbook and the creation of a “Chinese Culture and Language Palace” to align with the evolving needs of modern education.
Cao also took the opportunity to express his deep appreciation for the Shi family’s longstanding dedication to Filipino-Chinese education, acknowledging their pivotal role in the sector’s growth.
The awards were presented to the Outstanding Filipino-Chinese School principal Xu Pu Hua and the model teacher representative, Wu En Dian.
Both awardees emphasized how the Shi family’s generosity and commitment have set a remarkable example for the younger generation, inspiring many to join and support the continued growth of Filipino-Chinese education.
