The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) confirmed that it detected Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) Type A Subtype H5N2 at a duck farm in Talisay, Camarines Norte.
The case reported on Dec. 6, 2024 by the Animal Disease Diagnosis and Reference Laboratory (ADDRL) underwent routine surveillance by the Department of Agriculture (DA) regional field office V (RFO V).
This marks the first recorded avian influenza case in the province.
BAI recommended stringent quarantine and biosecurity measures to contain the virus.
It said the affected farm had initiated culling operations, with all remaining birds set for disposal. Surveillance within the 1-kilometer zone around the farm was expected to conclude on Dec. 11.
A comprehensive investigation is underway to trace bird movements and assess additional risks, BAI said.
The DA-RFO V Command Center was activated to coordinate containment efforts, while the Regional Quick Response Team for Animal Disease and Emergencies (RQRT-ADE) reviewed protocols under the Avian Influenza Protection Program (AIPP).
BAI assured the public that all necessary disease control measures are being implemented in close collaboration with government agencies and stakeholders to safeguard the poultry industry.
It asked the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any unusual poultry deaths or symptoms of illness to local authorities.
