The city government of Manila lifted its ban on the sale and distribution of alcoholic products such as wine, beer and the like effective yesterday.
Mayor Isko Moreno said that Executive Order No. 29, Series of 2021, dated September 15, 2021 lifted the ban on the sale of intoxicating drinks.
The EO came after Metro Manila shifted to Alert Level 4 of the General Community Quarantine (GCQ), effective from September 16 to September 30, 2021
“After consultation, the city finds it is not imperative to impose a liquor ban for now,” said Domagoso who met all concerned department heads and establishment owners.
Since the sale of intoxicating drinks were already allowed in Manila, Domagoso directed barangay authorities and the police to strictly implement the prohibition on drinking in public places, which stays despite the lifting of the liquor ban.
He also instructed barangay bureau director Romy Bagay to ensure that the basic health protocols are followed by the city’s 896 barangays.
Under the order, concerned establishments are mandated to follow local regulations and basic protocols like wearing of face masks and observing social distancing during their business operations. They are also not allowed to sell to minors.
The Manila mayor warned establishments found violating the rules. He stressed that Ordinance 5555 that prohibits drinking in public places is still very in effect.
That ordinance was issued following reports of residents drinking in the streets and even creating chaos .
This is also in violation of the ‘stay at home’ orders and the curfew being enforced in the city.
The mayor renewed calls for residents to use their money wisely and prioritize basic needs over vices like intoxicating drinks.
