One of six Filipino athletes set to compete in the 2021 Tokyo Paralympic Games has tested positive for COVID-19, along with an unspecified number of officials and coaches.
Because of this, there will only be five athletes seeing action in the games when their competitions officially begin on Thursday.
“The delegation landed safely in Japan and have cleared all the safety and health protocols. Those, who tested positive did not join the delegation anymore. Tuloy ang laban, definitely,” said chef de mission Francis Diaz in a message to the Manila Standard.

No further details were given on the status of the national delegation, which was supposed to be a 21-member contingent, that has already entered the Athletes’ Village.
On Thursday, swimmer Gary Bejino and powerlifter Achelle Guion are supposed to begin the Philippines’ campaign.
Swimmer Ernie Gawilan, who was a participant the 2016 Summer Paralympics, was among those who made it to Tokyo.
Philippine Paralympic Committee chief Michael Barredo said those who tested positive were still in Manila when they were examined.
“Despite the setback, we are confident that our athletes will give their best in pursuit of their Paralympic dreams, and to bring honor and glory to the country,” said Barredo in a statement.
According to reports, the first coronavirus case was detected in the Paralympics’ Village on Thursday last week.
The case involved a Games-related staff member, who is not a resident in Japan.
There are around 4,400 para athletes from 160 teams competing in Tokyo from August 24 to September 5.
Those staying at the village are required to undergo daily COVID-19 testing, wear face masks and maintain social distancing.
