Relevant action will be taken by the University of Athletic Association of the Philippines Board of Managing Directors once they have tackled the issues surrounding the University of Santo Tomas men’s basketball team and the National University women’s volleyball squad.

League officials said this after UST and NU presented their respective reports on their alleged violations of quarantine protocols recently.

The Board of Managing Directors, led by Edwin Reyes of Season 83 host De La Salle University, is set to convene today in an online conference.

“The UAAP Board of Managing Directors will convene on Thursday (September 3) to review these reports and tackle other related cases before taking pertinent actions,” said UAAP executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag.

Saguisag talked about the league’s next move at the end of a three-hour, virtual marathon meeting Tuesday with a government panel of the Join Administrative Order Group composed of officials from the Philippine Sports Commission, the Games and Amusement Board, the Commission on Higher Education and the Department of Health.

In a Zoom web conference, UST presented its case through legal counsel Atty. Melvin Verzosa and Atty. Elgin Perez. They handed over details that the university collated on the Growling Tigers’ training camp in Sorsogon, Bicol.

On the other hand, NU athletic director Otie Camangian talked about the events that the Lady Bulldogs went through when they were stranded.

Camangian said this took place when the team transferred from NU’s Manila to Laguna campus last March, days before the quarantine lockdowns were handed down.

Season 83 president Nonong Calanog of host De La Salle University listened, with GAB chairman Abraham Mitra, national training director Marc Velasco of the Philippine Sports Commission, Department of Health representative Rodley Carza and Commission on Higher Education executive director Prospero De Vera and Atty. Cindy Jaro.

Both schools submitted their findings to the CHED and the DOH, and did not provide copies to the PSC and the GAB.

“The league acknowledges the efforts of the University of Santo Tomas and National University (in participating at the meeting requested by PSC, GAB, and DOH concerning compliance with government-issued guidelines and protocols on the conduct of school and athletic activities during the community quarantine,” said Saguisag.

So far, the JAO panelist withheld their comments on the issues, pending a meeting, according to Velasco. Peter Atencio

With regards to the issue raised against UST, the PSC can not comment at the moment.

“UST submitted its report only to CHED and DOH.  The DOH, PSC, GAB and CHED will discuss their findings during the next meeting. No definite date has been set for the meeting, but it is planned for this week,” said Velasco in a statement.
