Toyota Motor Philippines is seeking fiscal and technical support from the government to allow automotive industry players to recover from the pandemic.

“We need appropriate assistance and collaboration with the government, so we could maintain local production and at the same time be competitive not only among brands but among regions,” said Toyota vice president for corporate affairs Rommel Gutierrez during a virtual briefing Thursday for the launch of Corolla Cross, a hybrid sedan.

“As you know the market is already 50 percent down from last year’s figure. So, it is really a challenge now. In fact, tremendous pressures have been felt by all the automotive industry players. We already sounded off the DTI that we will be the discussing with them, appropriate measures that we think is needed by the auto industry, particularly the manufacturing sector,” Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez said the requirement of 200,000 units of assembled sedans to qualify for incentives under the Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy might not be met.
