Spanish firm turns over $127m Putatan water plant

ACCIONA, a Spanish global leader in providing sustainable solutions for infrastructure and renewable energy projects, recently turned over the US$127 million (P6.36 billion) Putatan II drinking water treatment plant in Muntinlupa to its client, Maynilad Water Services Inc., after involvement in its design and construction up to its operation and maintenance for the first 12 months.

Through advanced reverse osmosis technology that uses a small carbon footprint, the new plant treats 150,000 cubic meters of raw water per day from Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the Philippines and the second-biggest inland freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, to provide clean and potable water to nearly 1.5 million people.

In strengthening its presence in the Philippines, ACCIONA bagged another Maynilad contract to put up a plant with similar requirements in the Laguna Lake area.

“One of ACCIONA’s goals in the country is to supply clean drinking water to as many households as possible,” Ruben Camba, ACCIONA Country Manager, said.

ACCIONA previously won the contract to construct the 650-meter Cebu-Cordova cable-stayed bridge that will provide a faster and more accessible connection between Cebu’s industrial zone and Mactan International Airport and to Cordova’s new urban developments on Mactan Island.

ACCIONA is a global company with a business model based on sustainability. Its aim is to respond to society’s main needs through the provision of renewable energy, infrastructure, water and services.

With a presence in more than 40 countries, it carries out its business activities based on the commitment to contribute to the economic and social development of the communities in which it operates.

The sustainability strategy at ACCIONA is executed through the Sustainability Master Plan, a road map which incorporates all of the company’s initiatives in this field.

ACCIONA’s goal is to lead the transition towards a low-carbon economy, which is why it equips all its projects with quality criteria and innovation processes intended to optimise the efficient use of resources and respect for the environment.

The company has been carbon neutral since 2016, offsetting all CO2 emissions generated which it could not reduce. ACCIONA features in selective sustainability indices such as the FTSE4Good, CDP Climate & Water A List 2017, and STOXX Global Climate Change Leaders Index, among others.
