Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Wednesday ordered the National Bureau of Investigation to set up a system to monitor what it considered “unfounded” and “malicious” information circulating in social media.

Guevarra made the order even as he assured that the Department of Justice is willing to extend assistance to Vice President Ma. Leonor “Leni” Robredo in investigating the fake news claiming that she sent spoiled hot meals to frontliners of a hospital in Quezon City.

“Today we are asking the NBI to establish a system of monitoring the spread of false and malicious information in social media, establishing the source, determining if there's a pattern, habit, or scheme, and taking the appropriate steps to preserve evidence of wrongful behavior for possible prosecution in the future,” Guevarra said in a text message to reporters. According to Guevarra, the system would help the NBI to easily investigate and facilitate complaints about malicious and fake social media posts.
