Once one of the most promising athletes in the ONE women’s atomweight division, Torres finds herself out of the picture as she struggles to follow a roaring start in The Home Of Martial Arts.
Still, she believes it is not too late to turn things around.
“There’s a feeling of loss on my part because I’ve faced athletes who are at the top of the list, but it also gave me a sense of urgency to double my effort and barge into the rankings,” Torres said.
“I know I missed a lot of opportunities. I had matches where if I won, I could have been in the rankings and closer to my dream of a title. But it’s not too late for me, I just have to work harder.”
Torres is referring to her battles against former ONE Atomweight World Title challenger Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi, who is currently number four in the rankings, and Lin “MMA Sister” Heqin, who is ranked number three.
The 24-year-old Dipolog, Zamboanga Del Norte native dropped a unanimous decision loss to Yamaguchi at ONE: DESTINY OF CHAMPIONS in December 2018 before she lost by triangle-choke to Lin at ONE: REIGN OF VALOR three months later.
For Torres, victories over Yamaguchi and Lin could have put her next in line for longtime division queen “Unstoppable” Angela Lee ONE Atomweight World Title, but regrets aside, Torres is far from disheartened.
“It’s all about doubling my effort now to get the results that I want. The nice thing about this is I know my status in the division, and I know the magnitude of the matches that I’ve competed in before,” she said.
“There has to be adjustments, both mentally and physically, so I can get bounce back. I know that it can be achieved. I have to focus and with the help of my team, I know I can still reach that goal.”
