The Department of Health on Friday reported a total of 263 road crash injury cases recorded from Dec. 21-26 based on data from 10 sentinel hospitals monitoring holiday-related incidents.
The figure reflected during the monitoring period still marked a 7% decline compared with the same timeframe in 2024.
The agency’s data showed that two people died during the period, both motorcycle riders who were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
Motorcycle-related incidents dominated the statistics, with 193 of the recorded cases involving two-wheeled vehicles traveling on national and local roads.
Alcohol use remained a contributing factor, as 31 individuals involved in road crashes were found to be under the influence at the time of the incident.
The DOH also noted widespread noncompliance with safety measures, with 224 individuals reported to have not used protective equipment such as helmets or seat belts.
Motorists were reminded to wear Department of Trade and Industry approved helmets, use seat belts at all times, and strictly follow traffic rules.
Drivers were also urged to avoid traveling when tired or intoxicated, observe speed limits and road signs, and ensure adequate rest of at least seven to eight hours before long trips.
In a separate report, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said firework-related injuries continued to climb as the holiday season progressed.
Police data showed 47 individuals injured by fireworks nationwide from Dec. 16 through Dec. 26.
Central Visayas recorded the highest number of firework-related injuries with 13 cases, followed by Soccsksargen with seven and Metro Manila with six.
The PNP said many of the injuries were linked to the use of illegal or prohibited fireworks despite repeated warnings.
During the same period, police units carried out 336 operations against illegal fireworks that resulted in the arrest of 23 individuals.
Law enforcement officials reiterated appeals for the public to avoid banned fireworks and choose safer alternatives ahead of New Year celebrations.
