DENR urges eco-friendly holidays to cut waste

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) urged Filipinos to celebrate the holidays responsibly by reducing waste through simple, eco-friendly practices.

The agency reminded the public to observe the 5Rs of waste management—refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle—especially during the Christmas season.

The DENR stressed that effective waste management starts at the household and community levels, with local governments playing a key role under Republic Act 9003.

It also cited progress in the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility Act, noting that more than 240 million kilos of plastic waste were diverted during the 2024 compliance period.

The country has surpassed its mandated recovery target, achieving a 56.12% diversion rate, the DENR said.
