The essence of ‘The Katig Way’

The essence of a true home is its power to be a sanctuary, a place you can run to where everything feels better. This profound feeling was beautifully reawakened during my last visit to Siargao.

Let me tell you the story of a journey—one that transformed a vision into a beachfront sanctuary, all to make Siargao feel like home for every visitor. This is how the Katig Hotel came to be.

Building an island home

Charles Tiu’s move to the island was a definitive escape from Manila’s frenetic pace. Seeking refuge from urban exhaustion, he joined his partner, Angela Lopez, whose love for the island’s raw beauty began in 2016. Together, they seized an opportunity, transforming a beachfront plot into the Katig Siargao Boutique Hotel in collaboration with local partners.

The origins of Katig Siargao stem from a distinct island need. Recognizing a gap in the market, it was conceived to offer a curated, more luxurious experience of island life, yet it remains intentionally accessible compared to other high-end resorts on Siargao. Its prized beachfront location materialized serendipitously; the founders secured the space from close friends who were stepping back from island business to focus on family in the city.

The site was an ideal find, offering direct beach access, stunning views, and prime proximity to General Luna’s vibrant restaurants, cafes, and shops.

Katig’s private beachfront offers the ultimate island luxury

More than its amenities, it is the story behind Katig that defines its character. The hotel is the realization of a shared vision among friends who wanted to extend their personal ideal of a Siargao getaway, dubbed “The Katig Way,” to visitors. This philosophy, deeply ingrained in the staff and service, aims to give guests an authentic glimpse of the island magic that captivated the owners.

“The most rewarding part of running Katig is the people—from helping our staff, who are locals of Siargao, find better jobs and improve their lives, to the guests who come to experience the magic of the island,” Tiu shares with this writer.

The name itself is central to this mission. “Katig” is the Visayan word for the outrigger of a traditional bangka boat, the essential component that provides balance and stability on the water.

This branding was chosen as a perfect metaphor for the hotel’s role: to be the stabilizing and guiding force for guests, ensuring their experience is seamless and perfectly poised for adventure. This commitment to actively facilitating an exceptional, balanced vacation is what truly distinguishes Katig from other accommodations.

At the core of Katig is a deep commitment to the local community, which Charles and Angela view as the heart of their business. They prioritize building meaningful connections with their staff and guests, fostering a shared sense of values and belonging that extends beyond the hotel’s walls. This community focus is integral to their vision, ensuring that the hotel contributes positively to the island’s social fabric and supports sustainable growth.

Every aspect of Katig’s design reflects thoughtful, purposeful creation, especially after being rebuilt with resilience in mind following Typhoon Odette.

The minimalist, industrial design with natural wood accents and clever features like bathroom skylights blends aesthetics with durability suited for the island climate. Its prime location in General Luna offers both beachfront serenity and convenient access to popular local restaurants and cafes, providing a perfect balance of escape and immersion.
