The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Friday officially opened the Navotas Greenzone Park and handed over its management to the local government of Navotas City.
Situated at the intersection of Daungan Street and R-10 Road in the North Bay Boulevard North (NBBN) area, the park is a component of MMDA’s extensive Adopt-a-Park initiative, which seeks to improve green spaces within the National Capital Region.
MMDA Chairman Romando ‘Don’ Artes and Mayor John Rey Tiangco led the inauguration and blessing of the park.
The Navotas Greenzone Park covers approximately 1,742 square meters and features a mix of softscape and hardscape elements, including shrubs, ground covers, paved walkways, planter boxes, benches, lamp posts, and trellises.
According to Artes, the park was completed with funds from the Department of Budget and Management through the Local Government Support Fund—’Green Green Green’ Program, as well as from the MMDA’s supplemental fund for park development and urban greening.
“The first three phases were funded from the local income of the MMDA, while the fourth phase was funded by the DBM and the MMDA’s supplemental fund. This is part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s commitment to building greener, more resilient, and sustainable communities,” Artes said.
For his part, Tiangco thanked the MMDA for its initiatives to develop open spaces in the city.
“It is not just a place where you can relax, unwind, and take a walk; it also helps the environment. Let us take care of it like an extension of our homes,” Tiangco said.
Under the Adopt-a-Park project, the LGU proposes the location, design, and cost estimate, while the MMDA sets the criteria for site selection, provides funding, and implements project construction.
Through this initiative, the MMDA hopes to curb urban decay, reduce urban heat, and provide safe and clean areas for family events and wellness activities—all important to the physical and mental health of the public.
Meanwhile, Artes provided an update on the MMDA enforcer who was wounded after a driver allegedly shot him during an anti-colorum operation in Muntinlupa City on Wednesday morning.
“He has been transferred to a private hospital, upon the request of his family, and is now recovering. He will need three to five days of observation before he can be discharged. The assailant is currently in police custody, with the inquest done last night, and is awaiting the prosecutor’s resolution so that he can be formally charged with frustrated murder,” Artes said.
Moreover, Artes added that the agency will coordinate with Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group Director Police Brigadier General Hansel Marantan on this matter.
“We will have close coordination with PNP-HPG so that during anti-colorum operations, our personnel will be accompanied by policemen for their safety and protection,” he said.
