CBCP official urges military to defend Constitution amid challenges

A Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) official has called on the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to remain steadfast in defending the Constitution as the country faces what he described as “challenging times.”

In a letter dated Nov. 14 and addressed to AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., Bishop Elias Ayuban of Cubao expressed the diocese’s solidarity with the military in its efforts to safeguard democratic institutions. The bishop personally delivered the letter to AFP headquarters.

“We stand firmly with you in the defense of our democratic institutions and the Filipino people, especially in these challenging times for our nation,” Ayuban wrote.

He commended the AFP for its “steadfast commitment to preserving peace, order, and national unity” in accordance with justice and democratic principles. Ayuban also assured the military of the Church’s pastoral support as political tensions continue to unfold.

“We join you in praying for the peaceful and lawful resolution of the present situation our country faces,” he said.

The AFP earlier disclosed that it was monitoring reports of possible attempts by certain individuals to instigate violence during protest actions. The information was shared with both the AFP and the Philippine National Police ahead of a three-day rally led by the Iglesia ni Cristo at Manila’s Luneta Park beginning Nov. 16.

In a statement, Brawner reiterated that the military will adhere strictly to constitutional processes.

“Do not expect the Armed Forces of the Philippines to engage in unconstitutional activities, nor will we resort to unconstitutional means to bring about change,” he said.

“We will stick to the rule of law, and we will not violate it. We will not stage a coup d’état, we will not form a military junta, because it is our country,” he added.
