‘Tino’ death toll climbs to 204

Typhoon “Tino” (international name: Kalmaegi) has claimed at least 204 lives, with 109 people still missing and 156 others injured across the Visayas and parts of Mindanao, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

OCD deputy spokesperson Diego Mariano said Cebu province suffered the heaviest casualties, recording 141 deaths, 57 missing persons, and 123 injuries.

Negros Occidental likewise reported 27 deaths, 42 missing, and 28 injured, while Negros Oriental had 20 deaths and 10 missing.

Other provinces also recorded casualties, including Antique (1 dead), Capiz (3 dead), Iloilo (1 dead), Guimaras (1 dead), Bohol (1 dead), Leyte (1 dead, 2 injured), Southern Leyte (2 dead), Agusan del Sur (6 dead), Surigao del Norte (2 injured), and Surigao del Sur (1 injured).

These figures were all subject to validation.

Authorities earlier said that rescue and relief operations are ongoing in the affected areas.

Before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday, Tino made landfall eight times and devastated many parts of the Visayas and Mindanao. Particularly, it caused heavy flooding, landslides, and widespread damage in Cebu.
