Marcos urges modernization as Marines celebrate 75th year

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Friday urged the Philippine Marine Corps to pair its time-honored bravery with modern tools and technology, saying courage must evolve with the demands of a changing world as the elite force marked its 75th anniversary.

“Bravery alone cannot meet the challenges of this modern world,” President Marcos said during the Marine Corps’ 75th founding celebration at the Gallio Events Hall in Parañaque City.

“A marine who answers the call must never face tomorrow with yesterday’s tools,” he added.

The President vowed continued investment in modern combat systems, new bases, and improved maritime domain awareness to strengthen the Marines’ readiness amid rising security and disaster threats.

“Under my watch, we will continue to provide you the means to match the mandate that you bear,” he said, adding that the government’s Self-Reliant Defense Posture Program would be revitalized to ensure the country’s forces are equipped for “tomorrow’s battles.”

President Marcos also underscored the Marines’ growing role beyond traditional defense, highlighting their vital part in disaster response and humanitarian missions, from rescuing flood victims to delivering relief in the aftermath of Typhoon Tino.

He noted that the government’s declaration of a state of national calamity aims to speed up aid and rehabilitation for affected communities, while preparations are already underway for another incoming typhoon that may prove stronger than the last.

“Help us secure our coasts, protect our people, rebuild our communities,” the president said. “Let’s ensure an immediate response and prompt preparedness,” he added.

A member of the Marine Basic Officer Course Class 01-79, Mr. Marcos spoke both as Commander-in-Chief and as a “comrade,” recalling the discipline and endurance that shaped his time with the corps.

“Courage is your heartbeat,” he said. “When others hesitate, you step forward. You are among the first to fight, you are the last to rest.”

He saluted the troops and their families, acknowledging that behind every Marine’s service are loved ones who share in the sacrifices.

“I want to thank your spouses, children, and parents who continually provide strength and inspiration to our soldiers,” he said.

“The ongoing support, care, and service that every Marine and their family deserve.”
