CBCP to the corrupt: ‘Confess, repent, return’ stolen public wealth

Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David has called on individuals involved in corruption scandals, particularly those linked to the flood control mess, to take responsibility for their actions through three crucial steps: admission, repentance, and restitution.

In a statement posted on CBCP News’ Facebook page, the Cardinal said those who have profited from corruption must “admit their wrongdoings, repent for their sins, and return the stolen public wealth.”

He said that corruption is a “moral sin” that weakens communities, drains national resources, and keeps people dependent on short-term relief instead of long-term progress.

“The stolen money must be returned, and the corrupt system must be eliminated, as it feeds on public wealth and personal interest,” David said in Filipino.

The cardinal reiterated the Church’s firm stance against corruption, emphasizing that the CBCP continues to advocate for accountability and reform through peaceful and lawful means.

His remarks came amid ongoing investigations and congressional hearings into alleged kickbacks and irregularities in flood control projects across the country.

Several lawmakers, contractors, and government officials have reportedly been implicated, with cases already filed against some of those involved.

David urged those burdened by guilt to seek “genuine peace and forgiveness” by embracing three paths and the courage to acknowledge one’s wrongdoing, sincere remorse for the harm done to society; and the willingness to make amends by returning stolen wealth.

“When there is admission, repentance, and restitution, it becomes easier to achieve true forgiveness and reconciliation,” he said.

The prelate also reminded public servants and members of the uniformed services to uphold the Constitution and view public office as a sacred duty, not a means for personal gain.

He called on all Filipinos, regardless of faith, to take part in building “a safe and just society” rooted in honesty and compassion.

“With the help of God and the courage of the Filipino people, light will prevail over darkness, truth over lies, and love over corruption,” David added.
