MMDA halts Pasig River ferry service

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Tuesday the temporary suspension of the Pasig River Ferry system.

The agency made the suspension due to the proliferation of garbage and aquatic plants in the river, which pose a risk to the operation of the ferry boats.

“The Pasig River Ferry Service is temporarily suspended operations today, May 19, due to the severe increase in garbage in the river, which is causing damage and malfunctions to ferry boats. Necessary cleaning is currently underway,” the MMDA stated in its advisory.

Garbage and water lilies have consistently plagued the operation of the ferry system, an issue that dates back to the tenure of former MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino, who made efforts to revive the ferry system.
