Kanlaon Volcano erupts in Negros Island

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Friday evening recorded a minor explosive eruption at the summit crater of Kanlaon Volcano in the Negros Island Region.

The incident lasted several minutes starting around 8:05 p.m. until 8:08 p.m.

The eruption generated a plume that rose 2,000 meters above the crater before drifting northwest as recorded by cameras in the Lower Masulog, Canlaon City observation station (VKLM).

Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) were observed descending the southern upper slopes within a kilometer of the summit crater.

Phivolcs has since stated that Alert Level 2 (moderate level of volcanic unrest) is maintained over the volcano. It advised the public to remain calm and rely only on official updates for accurate information.

The state volcanology bureau is closely monitoring Kanlaon Volcano’s activity, advising residents to stay away from the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone, and warning them of possible ashfall and lahar flows.

Meanwhile, local authorities have placed disaster units on alert and are preparing for possible evacuations should the activity persist.
