OFW Hospital performs milestone medical procedure

The Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) Hospital in San Fernando, Pampanga, marked a medical milestone after successfully performing its first Modified Radical Mastectomy (MRM) on a former OFW diagnosed with breast cancer.

In a statement on Thursday, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said that this is a major step in the country’s fight against breast cancer, which continues to be one of the leading diseases affecting women in the Philippines.

The Department said that a 39-year-old female, a former OFW, who was a patient at OFW Hospital, felt a lump in her left breast. She immediately consulted and underwent an ultrasound, biopsy, and other tests.

MRM is a surgery in which the entire breast, including the skin, nipple, and areola, as well as most of the lymph nodes in the armpit, is removed, while the chest muscle remains intact.

Dr. Krisha Mae F. Salazar, Head of Surgery of OFW Hospital, led the operation, assisted by OR Nurse Jesusa G. Santiago and Anesthesiologist Dr. Analyn Adlawan.

The operation went smoothly, and the patient is now in good condition.

This success demonstrates the dedication and skill of the health professionals of OFW Hospital, the Department noted.

OFW Hospital is a specialized government facility that provides free and quality medical services to OFWs and their families.

The government continues to strengthen it as a center of medical care and a symbol of its concern for “our New Heroes of the World,” the DMW said.
