DOTr official asked to explain use of protocol plate on unauthorized vehicle

Department of Transportation (DOTr) Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez sought an explanation from DOTr Undersecretary for Special Concerns Ricky Alfonso after an unauthorized vehicle bearing protocol plate number ’10’ was used, along with forbidden blinkers.

While Alfonso, as an Undersecretary, is entitled to use protocol plate number ’10’—a privilege also extended to justices—the Land Transportation Office (LTO) confirmed that the Lexus SUV in question was not the registered vehicle authorized to display the plate.

The incident has gained public attention after social media posts showed the SUV and Alfonso attempting to intervene as his driver and another motorist argued.

The confrontation reportedly stemmed from a recent road altercation on Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City.

The driver of the SUV, who was allegedly seen slapping the other motorist, has been fired and had his license suspended for 90 days.

The LTO has issued a show cause order summoning the driver and the vehicle’s owner to explain why they should not face administrative charges and license cancellation.
