LGUs get solid waste management tools

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has provided a range of tools for solid waste management (SWM) to 185 barangays in 13 local government units in the National Capital Region.

The initiative aimed to empower communities to enhance SWM practices, contributing to cleaner waterways and improved management as part of the Metro Manila Flood Management Project Phase 1, through the Community-Based Solid Waste Management Program.

Representatives from Barangays Hagonoy, Katuparan, New Lower Bicutan, San Miguel, Bambang, Calzada, Sta. Ana, and Wawa in Taguig, along with representatives from Barangays Martires del 96 and San Pedro in Pateros, received the tools on Thursday.

The donated items comprise pushcarts, roller trash bins, raincoats, rubber boots, tongs, reflectorized vests, rubber gloves, washable face masks, metal scrapers, flat and pointed shovels, bolos with holsters, scythes, brooms, dustpans, sacks, metal rakes, garbage picker steel handles, heavy-duty plastic crates, life vests, scoopers, trash traps, ropes, and three-wheel vehicles.

MMDA Chairman Don Artes emphasized the crucial role of barangays in maintaining trash-free waterways within their communities and in flood mitigation efforts, in accordance with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to enhance flood management strategies nationwide.

“Through your assistance and our support, we are optimistic that our waterways will remain clean and that we can prevent drainage blockages to effectively tackle flood issues in the metropolis,” Artes stated during the turnover ceremony held at the Labasan Warehouse in Taguig.
