Department of Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said over the weekend the government plans to roll out “White Revolution,” an agricultural transformation roadmap to ensure a stable, year-round supply of affordable vegetables and high-value crops.
The initiative will adopt a demand-driven, market-enabled strategy that complements conventional farming with protected cultivation systems (PCS), he said.
The plan calls for the establishment of “food corridors” positioned near major urban markets to curb price volatility and ease inflationary pressures tied to food supply disruptions.
The zones will feature greenhouses, refrigerated storage, and advanced post-harvest systems, enabling farmers to grow crops regardless of weather conditions, extend shelf life and reduce spoilage.
Tiu Laurel said climate change makes the shift urgent, citing how storms and flooding in August caused heavy production losses, disrupted vegetable supply chains and drove up prices. “We cannot afford to rely on good weather anymore. Protected cultivation is no longer optional – it’s a necessity,” he said.
