Government extends cash assistance to Filipinos detained in Jordan

Philippine Ambassador to Jordan Wilfredo Santos and Labor Attaché Armi Evangel Peña on Monday visited Filipinos detained at the Juweidah Women’s Correctional Facility and South Amman Nadara Temporary Detention Center in Amman to ascertain their safety and extend financial aid.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Peña informed prison officials in both facilities that the Philippine Government is extending cash assistance to each detained Filipino, amounting to 600 Jordanian dinars or approximately USD 850, whether they are documented or not.

This follows the Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac’s approval of a one-time cash assistance initiative for Filipinos in Jordan.

The Philippine envoy also conveyed his gratitude to the officials of the Juweidah Prison and the South Amman Nadara Temporary Detention Center for ensuring the welfare of detained Filipinos until the completion of their deportation procedures and/or their respective sentences.

Currently, there are 22 Filipino women detained in the facilities, 21 in Juweidah, and one in South Amman Nadara.

The prison visit, undertaken regularly by the Philippine Embassy and MWO-Jordan, also served as an opportunity for the diplomats to meet personally with the Filipinos and advise them on the continuing actions being taken by their government to protect them.
