Lawmakers named in Senate hearing mull complaints vs Discayas

Many lawmakers accused by the Discaya couple at a Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing of involvement in anomalous bidding of flood control projects have threatened to file complaints, including libel and perjury, against them.

“I will file a case against them for this blatant lie. My track record speaks for itself,” House Deputy Majority Leader and Quezon City Rep. Patrick Michael Vargas said, adding that the Discayas never had projects in their district.

Marikina Rep. Marcy Teodoro similarly said he is planning to file perjury against the Discaya couple for their “false testimony” that they made under oath: “With this, I am now contemplating on filing charges against the Discayas for lying and for trying to besmirch my good reputation.”

Former lawmaker and now San Jose del Monte Mayor Florida Robes is also set to file a libel complaint.

Quezon City Rep. Juan Carlos “Arjo” Atayde likewise categorically denied the allegations: “I will avail of all remedies under the law to clear my name and hold accountable those who spread these falsehoods.”

Meanwhile, Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Elizaldy “Zaldy” Co, who served as chair of the House Committee on Appropriations during the 19th Congress, denied Curlee’s allegations as “baseless” and “politically motivated.”

Romblon Rep. Eleandro Jesus Madrona also denounced the statement of contractor Pacifico “Curlee” Discaya, saying he has no project with the latter.

AGAP party-list Rep. Nicanor Briones likewise issued a statement, denouncing his inclusion in the list of politicians who allegedly received a percentage from projects of the Discayas’ companies.

“I strongly deny the baseless accusations of the Discayas against me in the Senate hearing this Monday morning. I do not know what their motive is for involving my name,” Briones said.

“We are already coordinating with our lawyer to file the appropriate case against the Discayas. We will not allow our name and character, which we have long protected, to be tarnished,” he added.

Uswag Ilonggo party-list Rep. James Ang also strongly denied accusations made by the contractor couple.

“I am totally surprised that my name has been mentioned. It is unfortunate that some interested parties have chosen to resort to name-dragging for their personal agenda,” Ang said.
