Manila Electric Company (Meralco) said Friday it is ready to respond to any power-related issues that may arise from Tropical Depression Isang.
Meralco, which serves over 8 million customers, said in a statement it is closely monitoring the weather and advised customers to take extra safety precautions against potential electrical hazards, particularly with the increased risk of flooding from the rains.
“Safety is our top priority especially during this period when flooding and heavy rains pose greater risks of electrical accidents,” said Joe Zaldarriaga, Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications.
“We encourage our customers to be extra vigilant this rainy season and to observe safety measures before, during and after a flood,” he said.
Meralco advised customers to immediately turn off the main power switch or circuit breaker if floodwaters enter their homes.
It also reminded them to ensure they are dry before handling any electrical facilities, to avoid contact with exposed wires, and to unplug appliances.
The company recommended that a licensed electrician check the electrical equipment after floodwaters recede in case of suspected water seepage.
Meralco also warned customers not to touch a circuit breaker or replace a fuse with wet hands or while standing on a wet surface.
