NBP bares huge drop in inmates congestion

THE Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has reported a significant decrease in congestion rate at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City, or from 313 percent in 2022 to 243 percent this year.

BuCor chief Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr., in his midterm accomplishment report to Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla, disclosed that the reduction stemmed from the construction of new facilities and the transfer of 11,601 prisoners from NBP to other operating prison and penal farms nationwide.

Catapang also reported that from June 2022 to June 2025, the BuCor released a total of 23,629 inmates or persons deprived of liberty exceeding the first three years during the past administration by 41.35 percent and surpassing the accomplishment of previous administrations.

The unprecedented release of prisoners was made possible thru efficiency in management screening and evaluation, as well as the effective implementation of the good conduct time allowance and expanded access to parole and executive clemency, Catapang said.
