The rehabilitation of Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) is expected to begin in 2027 and will be completed in just six months, according to Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manuel Bonoan.
EDSA’s major renovation was originally set to begin in the middle of June this year. However, the DPWH chief said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered a postponement to allow the government to conduct scientific research on strategies, including the use of “new technology,” to lessen its effect on traffic flow.
“The President is not in favor of prolonged lane closures on EDSA,” Bonoan said.
He added that the DPWH is prepared to commence work as soon as it receives the green light from the President. However, he noted that initiating this year amid the rainy season may not be feasible.
Bonoan said that the proposed schedule next year might not be an ideal time either, because the Philippines is set to host the 44th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.
The EDSA Rebuild project, estimated to cost P8.7 billion, covers the extensive renovation of nearly the entire 24-kilometer segment of Metro Manila’s busiest road to reduce traffic congestion, improve safety, and enhance the road’s durability.
Included in the proposed works are concrete reblocking and the installation of new asphalt on affected areas, widening of roads and enhancements to sidewalks, upgrades to drainage systems, improvements in lighting and signage, as well as maintenance of bridges and flyovers.
