The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Wednesday morning cautioned Filipinos particularly those residing in coastal areas of ‘minor sea-level disturbance,’ after the eastern coast of Russia was struck by a powerful earthquake measured at magnitude-8.7.
In a revised tsunami information, the Phivolcs warned of the potential impact of this seismic event. This developed after Japan upgraded its earlier tsunami advisory and predicted waves of up to three meters in height.
According to Phivolcs, the quake was monitored off Kamchatka, Russia at 7:35 a.m. on July 30. It had a depth of 74 kilometers.
“Coastal communities in eastern side of Philippines facing Pacific Ocean should stay away from the beach and not to go to the coast. People whose houses are located very near the shoreline of these provinces are advised to move farther inland,” Phivolcs said.
In light of this development, Albay Governor Noel Rosal alerted residents in the coastal barangays of Legazpi City and the Municipality of Rapu-Rapu.
Evacuation preparations were ordered as Phivolcs warned of tsunami waves not less than one meter in height expected to arrive between 1:20 PM to 2:40 PM on 30 July 2025.
“It may not be the largest and this waves may continue for hours so stay away from beaches and do not go to the coast, move farther inland” Rosal reiterated in his advisory as Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council chairman.
The governor ordered boat owners in estuaries or shallow coastal water of city/municipality to should secure their boats and move away from the waterfront.
Boats already at sea during this period should stay offshore in deep waters until further advised.
