U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday sharply reduced the timeline he is giving Russia to end its war in Ukraine, cutting a previously announced 50-day deadline to just 10 to 12 days.
Speaking to the press alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer after their meeting in Scotland, Trump expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the lack of progress in halting the conflict.
“I’ll announce it, probably tonight or tomorrow. But there’s no reason to wait. If you know what the answer is going to be, why wait?” Trump said, referring to his shortened deadline.
Earlier this month, Trump warned Russia of facing “severe” tariffs, potentially 100 percent, if it failed to reach a deal to end its war in Ukraine within 50 days. He also said secondary tariffs would be applied to countries purchasing Russian goods.
On Monday, Trump said, “I never really thought this would happen. I thought we’d be able to negotiate something, and maybe that’ll still happen, but it’s very late down the process, so I’m disappointed.”
Trump also said he is no longer interested in talking to Putin, noting that Russian forces continue attacking Ukraine and killing people even a day after the two leaders had “such respectful and nice conversations.”
