The House of Representatives on Monday morning formally began its first regular session of the 20th Congress with Secretary General Reginald Velasco reading the names of all members in attendance, who are set to elect their new Speaker.
There were 290 lawmakers who answered the roll call, Velasco said.
Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez is widely expected to continue his leadership of the lower chamber to advance key reforms that President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. aims to achieve for the rest of his administration under his ‘Bagong Pilipinas’ agenda.
Marcos will deliver his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) later in the afternoon. He said his speech will focus on ongoing social and economic programs amid a changing national landscape.
“We will be talking about the social projects of the government for people in need,” the President said.
The House of Representatives reopens its legislative session days after the Supreme Court struck down its impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte.
